USU Spirit Squad auditions will be held April 4-7, 2018


Audition Information

  • Auditions for the USU spirit squad will be held April 4-7, 2018. Information for pre-audition clinics can be found by selecting the area of interest below.

  • Auditions are open to incoming freshman, transfer students, and current USU students.

  • Our goal at tryouts is to field a squad of talented individuals who are also a good fit for our program. We are looking for individuals who will BEST represent USU and the Athletic Department. We will only consider individuals who are willing to work hard, take direction, and dedicate time & energy to building a successful Spirit Squad team.

  • It is important that you understand the amount of time that is expected of you if you are selected to be a member of the USU Spirit Squad. Each member is required to be available for numerous appearances, daily practice, all home games as well as select away games. Please note: THIS IS A HUGE TIME COMMITMENT!!

  • Spirit squad members are required to have and maintain a 2.75 GPA in order to be eligible to participate.

  • You must bring with you a completed registration form and a non-refundable registration fee of $25.00

  • Auditions will accommodate those interested in auditioning for BOTH Cheer & Aggiettes as well as those interested in BOTH Big Blue and Cheer.

  • Participants must be present at the scheduled audition dates to be considered for the Spirit Squad – video submissions are not accepted.

  • JUDGES DECISIONS ARE FINAL!

Try-Out Clinic

When: Thursday, April 5, 2018
Time: 4-6 p.m.
Where: Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum (850 N 800 E)
Registration Material: $25.00 (Cash or check) & completed registration form
What To Wear: Dance attire
What To Expect:
  • Begin learning the first of three audition routines that will be taught throughout the course of auditions.

  • No judging will take place during this time

  • Judging will begin Friday, April 6, following a quick review of material taught during clinic.

**Clinic Participation is mandatory**


Try-Outs

When: Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, 2018
Time: April 6: 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. (approx..)
April 7: 8 a.m. until team is chosen
Where: Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum (850 N 800 E)
What To Wear: Dance pants/bikers, dance top & dance appropriate shoes (gore boots, half soles, tennis shoes (for hip hop), etc.) – come performance ready!
What To Expect:
  • Friday, April 6, 2018: Check-in will begin at 7:45 a.m. Participants will continue to learn the last two of three total routines in three different styles - a technical jazz, hip-hop and pom routine. Sideline cheers will also be taught. Participants may be asked to perform "across the floor" combinations (taught at clinic) so judges can evaluate participants' technique and ability.

  • A series of initial cuts will be made Friday to determine who will be invited back for the final audition on Saturday, April 7 at 8 a.m.

  • Saturday, April 7, 2018: You will be judged on all the material that you learned and performed on Friday, April 6. Be prepared for a possible interview.

  • 10 positions are available.

  • You DO NOT need to prepare any of your own material. We are looking for advanced level technique and ability, stage presence, and someone who captures the Aggiette style.

Preparing For Try-outs

  • Master basic dance technique of balancing, centering, maintaining lines and controlling movements.

  • Enhance flexibility

  • Skills to practice are, but not limited to:
    • Turns - Double/Triple pirouettes, fouettes – in second and sustained
    • Leaps - Grande jete', switch, tilt, back & side leaps, Russian/Calypso
    • Kicks - Work on height and control

Please bring a filled-out registration form and a non-refundable registration fee of $25.00 with you (if you are under 18 years of age, make sure the application has your parent's signature on it). You can print the registration form online under "Audition Application", pick one up in the Taggart Student Center (room 326), or call (435) 797-2912 and we can send you one.

**Auditions are closed to everyone except the participants, judges and those helping with the auditions.

STUNT Clinics

When: Tuesday & Thursday, March 27 & 29, 2018
Tuesday & Thursday, April 3 & 5, 2018
Time: 6-8 p.m.
Where: Wayne Estes Center (corner of 900 N. 800 E.)
Cost: $5.00 per stunt clinic session (cash or check)
What To Wear: Cheer/Athletic attire
What To Expect:
  • Open to anyone interested in obtaining partner stunting experience prior to auditions.

  • Participants will be separated into groups & take turns stunting with each other.

  • Some critique & instruction will be provided by spirit squad coaches and current spirit squad members.

  • Safety will be the first priority. If you jeopardize your own safety or the safety of others, you will be asked to leave.

**Clinic Participation is OPTIONAL**


Try-Outs

When: Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, 2018
Time: Females: April 6: 12:30 p.m. - 6 p.m., April 7: 10 a.m. until team is chosen
Males: April 6: 3:30 p.m. - 6 p.m., April 7: 10 a.m. until team is chosen
Where: Dee Glen Smith Spectrum (850 N. 800 E.)
Registration Materials: $25.00 registration fee (cash or check) & completed registration form
What To Wear: Females: Solid colored shorts with spandex/bikers underneath, fitted tank top/t-shirt, & cheer shoes.
Males: Gym shorts, t-shirt and tennis shoes
What To Expect: Friday, April 6, 2018: Registration will begin at 12 p.m. for females & 3:15 p.m. for males
  • Females:
    • You DO NOT need to prepare any of your own material.
    • You will be taught & judged on a hip-hop dance, pom routine, and sideline cheers.
      • Judges will evaluate timing, rhythm, coordination, showmanship, execution, proper body placement, precision, as well as memory & poise under pressure.
    • You will be judged on the execution of running & standing tumbling passes of your choice. (See minimum requirements below)
    • Partner stunting will be judged on ability, technique, safety, execution, flexibility, difficulty, and potential.

  • Males:
    • You DO NOT need to prepare any of your own material.
    • You will be taught & judged on sideline cheers
        Judges will evaluate your appearance (USU image), poise under pressure, showmanship, & enthusiasm.
    • Running & standing tumbling passes are encouraged, but not mandatory.
    • Partner stunting will be judged on ability, technique, confidence, safety, execution, flexibility, difficulty, strength, coordination, and potential.
  • A series of cuts will be made throughout the auditions on Friday. Those participants that are not cut Friday will be invited back for the final audition on Saturday, April 7 at 10 a.m.

  • Saturday, April 7, 2016: You will be judged on all the material that you learned and performed on Friday, April 1st. Be prepared for a possible interview.

  • 6-8 female and 6-8 male positions are available.

**Safety is a PRIORITY** If you jeopardize your own safety or the safety of others, you will be asked to leave

Prepare For Try-outs

Girls
  • Cheers & Rally: Voice Quality, Showmanship, Appearance

  • Running Tumbling: Round off back handspring series or round off back handspring back tuck is the minimum requirement. Passes with more difficult elements are scored higher.

  • Standing Tumbling: Back tuck & standing toe touch back handspring are recommended.

  • Jumps and Kicks: Control & flexibility

  • Partner Stunts: Toss to hands - Liberty (minimum) although potential will be considered Optional advanced Stunts - Heel Stretch, Arabesque, Cupie, Full Downs, etc.

  • Dance ability- Timing, rhythm, coordination, precision and technique in hip hop and pom routines (taught at auditions).
 
Guys
  • Cheers & Rally: Showmanship, Appearance, Voice Quality

  • Tumbling: Standing Back Tuck preferred - Not required

  • Running Pass: Round off, back handspring, back tuck preferred – Not required

  • Partner Stunts: Toss to hands - Liberty (minimum) although potential will be considered optional advanced Stunts - Heel Stretch, Arabesque, Cupie, Full Downs, etc.
 

A MANDATORY team meeting will take place at the completion of tryouts on Saturday, April 2nd for all new squad members.

When: Wednesday, April 4, 2018
Time: Registration begins at 4:30 p.m.
Auditions begin at 5 p.m.
Where: Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum (850 N 800 E)
Registration Materials: $25.00 (Cash or check) & completed registration form
What To Wear: Athletic attire (i.e. basketball shorts, t-shirt, tennis shoes)
What To Expect: Come prepared with a 2 to 3 minute skit set to music that demonstrates dance skills, crowd interaction, tumbling, enthusiasm, creativity, and any other special skills you may have. You can use props.

You will also be presented with scenarios in which you will be judged on how you react and your improvisational skills.

About The Position

  • It is important that you understand the amount of time that is expected of you if you are selected to be Big Blue.

  • You will be required to be available for numerous appearances as well as a large number of games & activities at the University and around the community.

  • Big Blue is required to have and maintain a 2.75 GPA in order to be eligible to participate.

  • We will only consider individuals who are willing to work hard, take direction, and dedicate time and energy to building up Big Blue and his image, and to be the best representative of one of the country's BEST and most beloved Mascots.

  • Please note: THIS IS A HUGE TIME COMMITMENT!!!

Tryout Policies and Conduct

  • Big Blue auditions are open to the public.

  • Risk and Release Form must be completed and signed in order to tryout – form will be provided at registration.

  • NO VIDEO TAPING WILL BE ALLOWED DURING TRYOUTS

  • Safety Rules must be obeyed at all times. Please be professional and SAFE or you will be asked to leave the tryout.

  • All props must be cleared for use on the floor prior to your tryout. Violation may disqualify you.

  • JUDGES DECISIONS ARE FINAL! We will not discuss or critique your tryout at any time. Please learn what you can from this tryout experience.

  • Also, remember that the identity of Big Blue is to remain confidential!!

There will be a MANDATORY Spirit Squad Meeting (for the person selected as Big Blue) on Saturday, April 7, 2018.
