Meet the Regional Campus Candidates - 2018 Elections

Read about the 2018 USUSA elections Regional Campus candidates. They have each provided brief descriptions of themselves and their campaigns, which are presented below. Reach out to individual candidates for more information and prepare for Elections Week 2018, which runs from February 26th through March 2nd.

Regional Campus Candidates

Mike Booth

Mike Booth

Hometown: Tooele, Utah

Semesters completed at USU: 8

Major(s): Business Administration and Management Information Systems

Minor(s): Human Resource Management

Platform: My mission is to continue to expand USU’s Regional Campus system by providing greater access to student services, information, and opportunities to our students, their families, and our community.

Qualifications:

  • As the current Regional Campus President, and a past Executive Vice-President for Tooele, I am already familiar with the Regional Campus system and how student government works.
  • I have over 15 years of experience as a manager and in event planning, which benefits me when managing our budget, working with administration, and helping other officers with student events.
  • Over the past year I have worked with the campus administration to adapt several programs to more closely reflect the needs of regional campus students.
  • I am familiar with many of the needs and issues experienced by our students and my relationships with the administration aid me in helping provide the best experience possible to our students.
  • I have had a very successful year in student government this year, with many learning experiences.

Goals/Plans:

  • I want to keep student fees at an affordable level while still providing top quality services to our students.
  • Update and market the myVoice program for communicating student issues, comments, concerns easier with student government officers.
  • Continue to work with the administration to try to address the issues with class availability for Regional Campus students within state policy.
  • Push for more programs and services to be easier to access for USU Regional Campus students.
  • Find ways to increase the exposure of Regional Campuses and our students within the communities we serve.
 
Casadee Christensen

Platform: I want to create an inviting atmosphere for our students to express their concerns and ensure that their voices are heard.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in an executive position
  • Experience working on a committee to improve moral
  • Leadership role in FBLA during high school
  • The ability to communicate effectively

Goals/Plans:

  • Plan and execute student events to improve unity.
  • Provide students with a safe place to express concerns or suggestions. 
  • Help students locate the resources they need.
Alena Geiser

Alena Geiser

Hometown: Moab, Utah

Semesters completed at USU: 5

Major(s): Exercise Science

Platform: As Moab's Executive Vice President I would help the students and campus any way that I could. My goals include holding study groups for students, face-to-face tutoring, attending high school/middle school events, and to promote USU in local businesses.

  • Have been attending Moab USU for over three years
  • Young Life leader
  • Assistant youth soccer coach
  • Lifeguard supervisor

Goals/Plans:

  • Attend high school/middle school events, such as assemblies and career days.
  • Hold study groups for the students and/or providing face-to-face tutoring.
  • Add outdoor classes.
  • Reach out to tourists/abroad students that come to Moab.
  • Promote USU in local businesses

Platform: As your Executive Vice President I plan to promote communication, networking, and activities throughout the student body.

Goals/Plans:

  • To increase networking and communication among students.
  • Facilitate an activity for the students and their family members.
  • Look into getting better lighting in the parking lot.
  • Get updated discounts from local companies for the Student ID.
  • Create opportunities for community and school service activities.

Platform: My goal for this year is to help students accomplish and overcome the obstacles in school. Provide the information they need and answer the questions they may have. Provide an enjoyable experience at USU Uintah Basin.

Kelly Bjerke

Platform: I want to improve the student experience by making things known through increased transparency by use of a newsletter or bimonthly Grub N' Gab. I believe that students should be a part of the decision making process for their campuses. Make USU great!

Major(s): Technology Systems

Platform: Students are more likely to succeed and graduate if they enjoy their college experience. I will help students to enjoy school and gain a sense of belonging by maintaining great activities. This should be accomplished with minimum student body fees.

Platform: The Southwest Region is vast and diverse with unique challenges. My goal is to help unify the region by strengthening each site through fostering site student leadership and by creating communication and support for all students in the Southwest.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as Southwest VP for 2017-2018
  • Experience with community leadership (Miss Santaquin Director, Girl's State Counselor)
  • Peer Mentor for Nephi USU site for 2016-2017
  • Training facilitators throughout USU Southwest
  • Experience with parliamentary procedure and writing bills

Goals/Plans:

  • Continue to help unify the region through efforts in visiting the sites & communicating through the Canvas Southwest page.
  • Establish a social meda presence and relationships among the students of the Southwest region.
  • Help each site utilize the student fees in ways that will best help the individual needs of the students at each site.
  • Promote attendance and recruiting in the Southwest region.
  • Encourage student participation and input in student events and student leadership roles at each site.
